Today started with sprinkler shenanigans at the oasis at 11pm last night, the signs in the preserve clearly stated that Thursday nights were meadow sprinkle times, and tuesdays were the trees.. So we ..having a watch with a day of week function.. felt confident in our decision to leave the fly off our tent and watch the stars, knowing we were camped at the far edge of the tree line and safe from meadow sprinkles.. Jokes on us though, and every other camper there, the tree sprinklers went off and we were all scrambling half naked to put the covers on our tents before all our gear, down sleeping bags included, got drowned.. Fun times, while our gear escaped most of the water the same can't be said for us, we got sprayed a few times as the demon sprinklers made their multiple passes of our home
Otherwise staying at the preserve was a treat, we enjoyed the flush toilets immensely, with running water and provided soap to clean our filthy lil hands whenever we needed, and water, out of a faucet with no need to purify before use.. The things you learn not to take for granted out here is pretty humbling
We departed at a reasonable time, 6:40am, but within 20 minutes were in the sun, the canyon we were in provided basically no shade for most of the day, even when we crawled out of one and onto another, very exposed most of the day, we did however follow a creek for a good part of the day so water wasn't hard to come by, we are even camped by water, which is a total rarity
We didn't see to much wildlife today, a few crows, a nope rope with a different color than we have seen before, a bunny, and a yellow jacket murdering a butterfly, nature can be kinda horrifying..
Our lunch break was by a water fall 4 inches high, which was nice, and by lunch break I mean 4hr siesta to avoid the majority of the heat, so that was nice, shade was hard to come by but we made do
We made camp tonight at a site not listed in any of our maps, but clearly an established site by a team of some kind, they've buried a food stash, built a neat fire place/fire ring, made chairs from flat rocks of decent size around the fire ring, and cut logs for little tables, one standing height the other sitting height, and their crowning achievement was building a small cove in the nearby stream to hold their soda and beer cans and keep them relatively cool (the savages left a couple in the creek fridge that we saw)
So that's our relatively uneventful day, we are going back up into elevation tomorrow, 8000ft or so, hopefully we are better acclimated this time, and we are going to sleep to the sound of frogs.. Kinda awesome..
