This morning was foggy, so very foggy, we could see well enough to walk, but nothing much past the edge of the cliffs we were walking on, so we could have been walking past the best view on the planet and wouldn't have known, it was very quiet though, the wind was soft (thanks weather liars for another stellar prediction), the animals sedate, and not another hiker was to be seen
We were basically walking past and through clouds, the trees were being saturated in droplets, as were we, our faces had little water beads on them, and our clothes got a lil damp
It was this way for most of the morning, come around 11am when we reached the water resupply the sun and wind had cleared away a lot of the fog, leaving darker looking clouds behind that threatened rain. It remained cool and cloudy the rest of the day though, which was nice. I of course didn't respect the fact that the sun still burns a lil thru clouds and got a lil sun on my face as I opted to not wear my hat, I was well covered otherwise though
The water resupply was a couple large tanks maintained by an individual who lives nearby, Mike. We took a few litres and left a donation in the box, without this stop we'd had to have carried a lot more water than we carried yesterday.
By the time we took a small lunch break the wind had picked up and it was actually kind of cold. We got a strange piece of trail magic at our lunch spot, a couple surveyors were out doing surveying (oddly) and were kind enough to take our trash bag off our hands and throw it in their truck along with theirs, was a real boon and saved us about a 1.5lbs of trash to carry
After lunch we climbed up a thousand feet or so and started the decent to the next water source 10miles away. We got 5 miles of that done today and will finish the rest early tomorrow. I am still learning to gauge water needs accurately, I still err to heavily on the side of caution, probably tempered by a hike where I went a few hours without water and didn't like it, currently I have about a gallon, I need maybe a litre for the morning walk, maybe, if it's as cold as today we'll need maybe half of what we'd usually use, I need maybe half a litre to cook with, a splash to clean with, leaving me with at least a litre excess (2.2lbs), doesn't sound like much, but when your carrying five litres 20% extra kinda sucks, I roughly gauge water use at one litre every five miles, with maybe 2litres for a night to cook, clean, and rehydrate with, factoring in temp shifts is a new variable ill need more practice with
Anyways, we just had an invader to our campsite, was silly to think we'd be the only ones hiking 5 miles before the next water source, is a great distance to knock over in the morning.. So we will go and say hi and see what's what
